“In Russia sporting wrestling is not only sport, it is a part of society’s culture. It is one of most popular sports in the country,” the deputy minister of sport and youth policy of Russia, Pavel Kolobkov, said at the opening ceremony of the first team Europe Cup of free-style wrestling Moscow Stars.
The president of the International Federation of united styles of wrestling Rafael Marinetti expressed his gratitude to Russia for organization of the Cup, and stated that he agreed with the president of the Federation of Sporting wrestling of Russia Mikhail Mamiashvili that such events will be held regularly. In one of his recent interviews Mamiashvili said that it was easy to organize the tournament in Russia despite small number of the participated countries, because Moscow has all facilities for such major sporting events. He noted that in Europe wrestling is not very popular, and the European Federation of Wrestling needed a major sporting event ahead of the Olympic Games.
Sportsmen from Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bolgaria, Georgia, Turkey and Russia participated in the tournament.
