UEFA decided to hold the match for UEFA Super Cup in Tbilisi in 2015. Traditionally the winners of the Europa League and Champions League meet in this annual match. Till recent time matches for Super Cup had been carried out at the stadium “Louis II” in Monaco. However, UEFA decided to conduct this prestigious match in Prague next year, then in Cardiff in 2014, and a year later in Tbilisi at Mikhail Meskhi Stadium. The decision is made within UEFA policy on extension of football geography.
The general secretary of UEFA Gianni Infantino announced this pleasant for Georgian fans decision at the press conference in Kiev.
This year Monte Carlo will welcome Chelsea from London and Athletico from Madrid on August 31. Nobody can say who will come to Tbilisi in three years, but there is no doubt that this match will be a great festival for the capital and the whole country.
Sources in the Football Federation of Georgia told VK that Tbilisi even tried to gain the final match of Champions League, but European colleagues hinted that Georgia was not ready for the final match of the main European tournament. But UEFA Super Cup might be a perfect test for maturity.
The authorities got down to work enthusiastically. They understand that organization of the Super Cup match might be a serious argument in favor of the joint application (with Azerbaijan) for the European Cup in 2020. A special sum of money will be allocated from the budget for reconstruction of Mikhail Meskhi stadium and building necessary infrastructure.
