Mehriban Aliyeva, the First Lady of Azerbaijan, represented the country at the French capital personally. She opined that the Baku Games would open a new page in the history of European sports. “We are a nation with an ancient history and culture, and the independence we dreamed about for centuries is our biggest achievement. The success and achievements made in the period of independence are very important for the Azerbaijani people. Realizing economic and political reforms simultaneously during the period of independence, Azerbaijan achieved a formation based on democratic principles of a free society and a powerful economy. Today, our country has all freedoms. The country has free Internet, used by over 70% of the population,” said Mehriban Aliyeva.
The First Lady of Azerbaijan reminded that all religions and nationalities had been living in the country hosting the European Games in an atmosphere of brotherhood and mutual understanding. In her words, Azerbaijan became a world center of multiculturalism.
Over 6,000 athletes will take part in 20 types of sports. Azerbaijan joined the Olympic Games in 1996 and its medal count has been rising ever since. At the latest Summer Olympic Games, Azerbaijan won 10 medals, including two gold, ranking 15th in the list of European countries and 30th in the list of all countries. At the Youth Olympics in China this year, Azerbaijani athletes won 12 medals, including 5 gold, ranking 10th in the list of about 200 countries. Baku will hold the Games at 21 centers. It is building new arenas and modernizing existing ones.
Mehriban Aliyeva said that the Association of Azerbaijani Friends will be reestablished in France in 2014. “Our country has over 50 French companies, hundreds of Azerbaijani students study at French universities. The French lyceé in Baku has already received its first students, there are negotiations to open a French university in our capital. Baku is forming a residential center called the White City, and some of the buildings here are built in the architectural style of Paris. Ties are also developing between countries in the sports sector. I hope all the opportunities provided in the period of preparations for the European Games will be used and that ties will become stronger.”
David Deauville, twice Olympic champion, a member of the French National Assembly, supposed that the European Games would improve the positive image of Azerbaijan in the world, promoting humanism and peace.
