Match between "Spartak" and "Zenit" ends up in fight

A crucial, tense football match between Spartak Moscow and Zenit St. Petersburg ended up in a conflict that nearly grew into a mass brawl.

The end of the game was marked by a clash between the halfback of Zenit, Igor Denisov, and the coach of Spartak, Valery Karpin. The clash provoked a general scramble between almost all members of both teams and staff of the clubs.

The management of the football clubs laid the blame for the accident on each other. Valery Karpin claimed Igor Denisov was at fault, the head coach of Zenit Luchano Spalletti made little account of what happened, the president of Spartak Leonid Fedun blamed Zenit as a club in general, and, in its turn, Zenit stated that the fight was provoked by a stranger wearing Spartak's kit, who hit one of Zenit's coaches. A video recording of this episode has been downloaded onto the Internet. Zenit expects an internal investigation into the incident on the part of Spartak.
