The All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) published its data on the attitude of Russian citizens towards the 2018 World Football Championship, due to take place in Russia. The poll was conducted in December 2010. 1600 people from 138 populated areas of 46 regions were asked about their attitude towards the forthcoming event and whether they knew about Russia submitting an application for the World Cup. The margin of error is no higher than 3.4%.


62% of Russians look forward to WC-2018 (as compared to 57% in September) and only 12% have a negative attitude towards it. Residents of southern regions (79%), young people aged 18-24 (74%), people with higher education (69%), internet users (69-70%) and people well provided for (67%) express the highest level of approval.

However, only 51% of Russians knew about Russia submitting an application to host Football World Championship 2018. Residents of southern regions and the North Caucasus are the most informed, at 57% (only internet users and people with higher education show higher figures – 58% and 59% respectively).
