A court in Baku sentenced 62-year-old Rashid Beglaryan, who participated in the genocide of Azerbaijani civilians in Khojaly in February 1992. The victims of those events were 613 Azerbaijani civilians. Another 150 people are listed as missing.
He was accused of violating the laws and customs of war and international law. In addition to this, he tortured civilians. Beglaryan was also arrested for illegally crossing the state border and forming illegal military groups.
During the trial, the convict stated that he regretted participating there. During the interrogation, the criminal spoke about the crime scene, and also showed where exactly the bodies of the murdered citizens were buried.
The prosecutor demanded that the defendant be punished for 17 years, but he was sentenced to 15 years in prison: he will spend 5 years in prison, and the remaining 10 in a maximum security colony.
