Georgia has chosen its Athletes of the Year. Experts from Georgia's National Olympic Committee awarded the honorary title to the winners of the World Championships – Sandro Bazadze (fencing) and Eter Liparteliani (judo).
Bazadze secured his inaugural world gold medal by defeating French sabre fencer Jean-Philippe Patrice in the championship final, while Liparteliani claimed the world title in Hungary, defeating her opponents in the 57 kg weight category.
The Georgian Fencing Federation was named the best federation, and the Georgian national judo team was named the best team.
Team sports recognition went to basketball star Tornike Shengelia for leading Georgia's historic European Championship quarterfinal achievement, while figure skaters Anastasia Metelkina and Luka Berulava were recognized in winter sports.
