19 high-ranking Georgian officials sentenced in one year

In the first nine months of 2016, the Georgian prosecutor's office has secured the conviction of 19 high-ranking officials, the report of the Prosecutor General Irakli Shotadze says.

According to the report, from November 2012 to October 1, 2016 more than 200 cases committed by officials under Mikhail Saakashvili's rule, have been under investigation.

Criminal charges were brought against 185 officials, including the former Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili, the former Justice Minister Zurab Adeishvili, the former Defense Minister Bacho Akhalaia and the former head of the General Staff Giorgi Kalandadze.

145 cases had been brought to court, of which 100 were sentenced and 8 were acquitted, Sputnik Georgia reports.
