Adviser to UN Syria envoy calls for sanctions revision to limit impact on Syrians

Sanctions on Syria need to be constantly modified to limit the damage they do to civilians and refugees wishing to come back, the adviser to the UN special envoy for Syria said Thursday, UrduPoint reported.

"Any sanction that hurts civilians is wrong ... I would say it [issue] should be continuously studied and modified to avoid sanctions hurting civilians, including those who may want to return now as refugees from neighboring countries," Jan Egeland said at a briefing.

Asked whether it was time to lift sanctions imposed on Syria during the seven years of war, Egeland said he did not know that.

He added there were conflicting opinions in the UN humanitarian task force, with those supporting the Syrian government arguing restrictions were devastating for the civilian life and those who brought in the sanctions saying Damascus was not asking for exemptions.
