Gambian President Yahya Jammeh has announced today the Islamic Republic, a statement on the official website of the President reads.
"From today, Gambia is an Islamic state. We will be the government that will respect the rights of citizens," RIA Novosti cites the text of the statement.
About 90% of the population of Gambia - 1.7 million people - consider themselves the Muslims, but so far there were no state religion.
