Zurkhaneh is one of the oldest sports, the coach of the Azerbaijani national team, Aga Yusif Kurbanov told to a correspondent of Vestnik Kavkaza after the awarding ceremony. According to him, this sport existed at the time, when Azerbaijan was a part of Iran.
”Soldiers were trained, they lifted heavy weights, if a person could not do this, he did not participate in wars," Agha Yusif Kurbanov.
He added that the Zurkhaneh Federation was created in Azerbaijan 10 years ago, while in Iran, it is functioning for more than half a century.
According to the coach of the Azerbaijani team, zorkhaneh is a very useful sport, as it comprehensively develops body and strengthens health. He specified that zorkhaneh is a wrestling predominantly, so athletes do not receive traumatic blows.
"It's not a traumatic sport, it makes a person healthy and strengthens his spirit. We need everyone to be healthy, this is the most important thing, "the coach said.
He also stressed that Mehriban Aliyeva, the Azerbaijani Vice President, personally included zorkhaneh in the Islamic Games program.
"Before, this sport was not included in the Islamic Games. A great attention is paid to this sport, for example, the athletes are always provided with all necessary, they receive assistance in their studies and so on. And a great attention is paid to this sport by our Vice President Mehriban Aliyeva, and by our president Ilham Aliyev ", the coach concluded
Recall, the Azerbaijani team won the silver medal in zurkhaneh at Islamic Games in Baku.
