Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said 90% of the construction of the first reactor of Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) has been completed and mechanical tests have been launched at the reactor.

According to Erdoğan, Türkiye aims to reduce energy consumption by 16% until 2030, which will contribute to the reduction of 100 million tons of emissions and create energy efficiency worth up to $20 mln in the public and private sectors.

The foundation of the first reactor was laid in April 2018, while the construction of the second, third and fourth units started in June 2020, March 2021 and June 2022, respectively.

The three remaining units are due to start operation by the end of 2026, at a rate of one per year, to ultimately have a total installed capacity of 4,800 megawatts (MW).

The power units with VVER-1200 reactors comply with the requirements of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
