Alexander Mikhailov: North Ossetia nurtures fencing talent for Russian national team

Russia's fencing team constantly receives athletes from North Ossetia, the President of Russian Fencing Federation Alexander Mikhailov said, speaking with the correspondent of Vestnik Kavkaza.

"The North Caucasus is, of course, North Ossetia. We constantly receive athletes for our Russian team. Many fencers came out of North Ossetia, one of the most famous ones is Aida Shanaeva, who, perhaps, will be in our rapier team again," he said.

"Ossetian youth also performs at a good level," the president of the Russian Fencing Federation noted.

Speaking about the development of fencing in the South Caucasus, he especially noted Georgia, whose representatives won two medals at the European Championship in Tbilisi: Theodora Kakhiani won gold in individual saber, sabre fencer Sandro Bazadze won a bronze medal. It testifies to the really serious work of the Georgian fencing federation. Georgia has always had strong fencers in the Soviet era, and now this work is being revived," he added.

"Georgian specialists are focusing not only on a sabre, they will develop a foil, a epee. They are going to build a specialized fencing hall in Tbilisi and attract specialists, maybe not only Georgian, but also foreign ones, for training their team," Alexander Mikhailov said.
