The Fans' House in Baku held a press conference of the Russian Olympic Committee’s president, Alexander Zhukov, where unofficial results of performances of the Russian team at the First European Games were announced.
As the correspondent of Vestnik Kavkaza reported, the head of the Russian Olympic Committee stressed that the European Games were successful. "Before the commencement of the competition, many had doubts about the level at which the games would be held. Today, it’s clear that the European Games have been organized well. And famous competitors participated in the games, which caused strong competition for medals," Zhukov said.
According to him, the Russian athletes were able to perform even better than expected, "in both Olympic and non-Olympic sports." Zhukov said that the team was not planning on winning any specific number of medals.
Speaking about the non-Olympic sports of sambo and karate, Zhukov expressed the hope that the European Games will help them to get into the Summer Olympics. "Sambo is a Russian sport, and I think this year it should be recognized as an Olympic one, after which entering it into the Olympic Games program will be considered," Alexander Zhukov stressed.
Also, he expressed confidence that such a significant success during the First European Games guarantees great prospects for continental competitions in the future.
Alexander Zhukov thanked the organizers of the European Games in Baku for the creation of the Fans' House, congratulated the national team of Azerbaijan on its successful performance and wished it success in the remaining two days.
