Alexei Pushkov: South Caucasus countries are extremely important for Russia

As a result of the announcements in the presidential address to the Federal Assembly, the Head of the Duma's International Affairs Committee, Alexei Pushkov, told Vestnik Kavkaza that the fight against terrorism mentioned by Vladimir Putin will be impossible without the countries of the South Caucasus.

"The countries of the South Caucasus are extremely important for us due to history, by virtue of the fact that we belong to one state, and that we have very much in common with them now. The relations with Armenia are allied, the relations with Azerbaijan are very close and definitely strategic. The relations with Georgia are not yet fully normalized, but there is not the hostility that distinguished the foreign policy of Georgia during Saakashvili, so there, too, there is some progress," the parliamentarian said.

"I think that these countries can play a very significant role in combating the terrorist threat. They are arranged in such a way that they can themselves be subject to the spread of very dangerous trends emanating from Daesh, and, I think, they can also play a political, organizational and infrastructure role,’’  he said.

"So I think that here the broad coalition, the united anti-terrorist front mentioned by Russian President Vladimir Putin, of course, needs the participation of these countries," Alexei Pushkov summed up.
