Andre Geysbyuller: Clean athletes shouldn't be banned from Olympics

There is no place for politics in sports, secretary general of the International Gymnastics Federation Andre Geysbyuller said in an interview with Vestnik Kavkaza on the sidelines of the FIG World Cup Final in Rhythmic Gymnastics in Baku, commenting on the expected decision of the International Olympic Committee to ban all Russian athletes from the Olympic Games in Rio.

"Sometimes I agree that it is a very politicized issue, and my opinion - there is no place for such politicized position in sports. We work by our rules, sports rules. According to rules - doping cannot be used, everyone should be clean, but the IOC must decide what to do with others," he pointed out.

"On Monday we published press release, where we stressed that we don't understand why athletes, who passed all qualifications and are clean, in other words don't have positive doping tests, should be banned from the Olympics. We believe they should participate in the Olympic Games. So let's wait for the IOC's decision," he added.

At the same time, he expressed doubt that this scandal started because of politics. «WADA sent anti-doping, complaint. Many people think that this is primarily politics, that Americans, British or someone else spoke against Russia. But it all started with WADA," he recalled.

It should be noted that according to sources, official decision on Russia's participation in the Olympic Games in Rio was already made and it will be published shortly.
