Georgian authorities are proceeding with the modernization of the Mtskheta-Stepantsminda-Lars highway, also known as the Georgian Military Highway, which leads to the Russian border.

The new phase of the project involves upgrading a 27-kilometer section between Tsitsamuri and Zhinvali. Once complete, this segment will be expanded to a four-lane road.

Additionally, 16 new bridges will be constructed along this stretch. These structures are designed to allow for safe travel speeds of up to 120 km/h, cutting the current travel time for this section to approximately 15 minutes.

The project has already been submitted to the Department of Environmental Supervision.

This initiative follows the ongoing construction of the 24-kilometer Kobi-Kvesheti section of the same highway. The project cost is $1.2 billion lari. Work is expected to be completed in 2028. That project includes the construction of a 466-meter arch bridge, which will be the longest of its kind in Georgia.
