Arkady Dvorkovich appointed new FIDE president

Arkady Dvorkovich was elected new President of FIDE (World Chess Federation) at the General Assembly on Wednesday, Sportstarlive reported.

He is taking over from fellow Russian Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, who was ousted in July.

Dvorkovich was crowned the new FIDE head after British chess grandmaster b withdrew his candidacy.

The Russian candidate then defeated the only remaining candidate, Georgios Makropoulos, by 103 votes to 78. Dvorkovich becomes the first new president since 1995.
