 Armenia Parliament honors October 27 tragedy victims

Armenia's National Assembly commenced Friday’s session with a minute of silence to honor the victims of the tragedy that occurred in the parliament on this day in 1999.

Speaker of Armenia's National Assembly Ara Babloyan announced a minute of silence, News.am reported.

During a regular session of the National Assembly on 27 October 1999 five armed men led by Nairi Unanyan rushed into a conference hall of the National Assembly of Armenia and shot 8 people. 

Chairman of the National Assembly Karen Demirchyan, Prime Minister Vazgen Sargsyan, vice-chairmen of the National Assembly Yury Bakhshyan, Ruben Miroyan, deputies Mikael Kotanyan, Heinrich Abramyan, Armenak Armenakyan and the minister of operational issues Leonard Petrosyan were killed.

The trial of the terrorists was held from 2001 to 2003. As a result, six of them were sentenced to life imprisonment, whereas another one was handed down a fourteen-year prison term.
