Armenia's economy will only grow insignificantly this year

Economic growth in Armenia according to the results of this year will be insignificant, or may not occur at all. Such a forecast was made by the Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for the Middle East and Central Asia, Masood Ahmed, summing up his visit to Yerevan.

"Our current forecast is that the Armenian economy this year will have a very small increase. It is possible that there would be none at all," he said, expressing his hope that the IMF is wrong.

Earlier, the IMF Resident Representative in the Republic, Teresa Deban Sanchez, expressed her negative forecasts for the Armenian economy. "We adhere to views that are different from the Armenian government's views and it is natural," she said. "We see that if the situation in Russia worsens, the economy of Armenia suffers." According to her, "Armenia needs a more dynamic economy."

Commenting on these assessments, the Minister of Economy of Armenia Karen Chshmaritian stated that "the international organizations rushed to make negative forecasts regarding the growth of the economy of the republic, not taking the internal capabilities of the country into account."
