Armenian Economy Ministry expects growth of investments after EEU membership

Armenia’s membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) cannot have a negative impact on direct foreign investments, the head of the Investment Policy Department at the Ministry of Economy, Vahagn Lalayan, told Tert.am today.

"We expect that there will be a positive effect. Armenia’s membership in the EEU has nothing to do with investments. If you mean the decreased Russian investments in Armenia, that’s due to the domestic situation in Russia, not Armenia or our EEU membership. The outcome is not likely to be negative under any circumstances," RIA Novosti cited him as saying.

Asked why the other EEU member states have not so far made investments in Armenia, Lalayan said that these countries haven’t ever been major trade partners for Armenia. "Perhaps, there are geographic or other problems. Perhaps, it is due to a lack of information. The EEU membership, in this respect, could be a good stimulus for us to know our partners’ economic advantages. Also, we should bear in mind that Kazakhstan and Belarus, which are developing states, attract rather than make investments," he said.
