Armenian press review (January 17-23th)

Armenian media have almost ignored the meeting of Serzh Sargsyan and Ilham Aliyev that took place in Bern. They wrote about the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict through the prism of the position of the US State Department. The press wrote about why society’s New Year mood was not so festive, wondering what will happen after the Christmas cheers and fireworks and surprising why Armenian villages are left even by the elderly.

The Armenian mass media almost ignored the meeting of Serzh Sargsyan and Ilham Aliyev in Bern. Before the meeting we could write timid expectations. After the meeting they preferred to keep silent, focusing readers' attention on the deterioration of Russian-Turkish relations.

We can read the following information in Zhoghovurd about the meeting between the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan: "Significant events took place in the region. Russian-Turkish relations reached an unprecedented tension, which is to have a significant impact on the agenda of the upcoming meeting. As a result of the Russian-Turkish conflict, the interests and intentions of all parties involved in this process have been changed. However, it is a new process and the development is uncertain in order so the parties could form clearer perspective in terms of their long-term interests.

Haykakan Zhamanak develops the theme of the Russian-Turkish conflict: "Yesterday Defense Minister Seyran Ghanian officially recognized that Turkey violated the airspace of Armenia. The Armenian Defense Ministry, as well as the Foreign Ministry, remained silent in this regard, and didn’t make any comments. But yesterday Seyran Ohanyan did not explain what the Turkish aircraft were doing in Armenian airspace, and whether it was possible to expect new surprises against the background of the aggravation of Russian-Turkish relations.
