Armenian provocations are aimed at disrupting the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh problem, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry says

The provocations, arranged by Armenian armed forces on the contact line in the conflict zone around Nagorno Karabakh, which coincided with the meeting of the OSCE Ministerial Council, held in Belgrade, the organization of meetings of the Foreign Ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan with the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs, as well as on the background of the statements of Foreign Ministers of the OSCE Minsk Group, are aimed at aggravating the situation, to disrupt the negotiating process, to postpone the peace settlement and thereby maintain the status quo, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesman Hikmat Hajiyev stated.

He noted that during the last days, on the frontline, as well as along the borders of the two countries, the Armenian side carried out provocative and subversive actions, and regularly violated the ceasefire regime, including by the use of large-caliber weapons. These irresponsible actions, that resemble military misadventure, led to the fact that over the past two days two soldiers of the Azerbaijani army died and two others were injured.

Hikmet Hajiyev recalled that something similar was observed in November 2014, when immediately after the meeting of the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan in Paris, initiated by the French President Francois Hollande, large-scale exercises of the Armenian Armed Forces were arranged on the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, which were attended by 46 thousand soldiers and more than 5 thousand pieces of military equipment, which resulted in a well-known incident with a helicopter.

The presence of the Armenian armed forces on the territories of Azerbaijan remains a major obstacle in conflict settlement, provides deterioration of the situation and leads to incidents, Hajiyev added.

"Azerbaijan has repeatedly stated that for advances in resolving the conflict and restoring peace in the region, it is necessary, first of all, to withdraw the Armenian Armed Forces from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, as is required by the four UN Security Council resolutions," the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesman stressed.
