Assassination attempt on President of Kazakhstan prevented

Kazakh intelligence services have detained a foreign intelligence agent who was preparing an assassination attempt on Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the press service of the National Security Committee of Kazakhstan reported on Sunday.

"On March 25, 2022, in the city of Nur-Sultan, the counterintelligence of the NSC detained a foreign intelligence agent, citizen of Kazakhstan "A", who was planning an assassination attempt on the President of Kazakhstan and a number of high-ranking government officials", the NSC informs.

The foreign agent also planned to commit terrorist attacks against law enforcement officers. During the search, drugs, money and a foreign-made sniper rifle were seized from the detainee. The rifle was imported into Kazakhstan in parts in a disguised form.

"In addition, Agent A worked out tasks to promote anti-Russian propaganda in Kazakhstan and create Russophobic views in society", the department added.

The detainee confessed to committing the above acts on the instructions of a foreign state.

An investigation has been launched into the commission of crimes under Part 1 of Art. 24 ("Preparation for a crime and attempted crime") and Part 4 of Art. 255 ("Act of terrorism") of the Criminal Code of Kazakhstan.
