Astana preparing new Geneva talks on Syrian settlement

Russian delegation arrived in Astana to participate in a technical meeting on Syria on February 6.

Deputy head of the Main Operational Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces General Staff Maj. Gen. Stanislav Gadzhimagomedov will head a group of Russian experts at a meeting on Syria in Astana on February 6, a source with knowledge of the situation said.

Representatives from Jordan will take part in the first meeting of the joint task force along with experts from Russia, Turkey, and Iran, the source said.

The task force is to discuss the observance of the ceasefire by Syria’s conflicting parties, to elaborate measures of control and preventing ceasefire violations, of building up trust between the Syrian authorities and the opposition, and to look at matters of humanitarian assistance. Special attention is expected to be focused to the separation of the moderate oppositions from Jabhat al-Nusra groups.

On January 23-24, representatives of the Syrian government and the armed opposition groups for the first time since the start of conflict held negotiations in Astana, Kazakhstan. The talks were brokered by Russia, Iran and Turkey, which also agreed to establish a trilateral mechanism to monitor the ceasefire.
