Kazakhstan plans to ratify the Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea in the near future, the Kazakh Foreign Ministry’s Ambassador-at-Large Zulfiya Amanzholova said.
"We intend to ratify the convention in the near future. The Foreign Ministry will launch the necessary procedures immediately. We will submit the convention to the government, the time frame and all the procedures are determined, so I don’t think there will be any delays," TASS cited her as saying.
In addition, the official said that the Kazakh government will later pass the document to the parliament. Amanzholova added that it had taken the Caspian states a long time to agree on the matter so there was no reason to "delay its ratification."
The presidents of the five Caspian states (Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Iran and Turkmenistan) singed the Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea, which had been agreed on by the five states’ foreign ministers at their Moscow meeting in December 2017, at the 5th Caspian summit held in Kazakhstan’s Aktau.
