Iranian President Hassan Rouhani underlined that the recent agreement signed by the Caspian Sea littoral states' leaders in Kazakhstan thwarted the US and NATO plots to deploy forces in the region.
"The Americans and even the NATO had plotted for presence on the Caspian Sea coasts and deploy forces there so that the boots of their soldiers would reach the Caspian Sea shores and their frigates, helicopters and bases would be stationed there," Rouhani said, addressing a cabinet meeting in Tehran.
The president referred to the Convention inked by the Caspian Sea littoral states in Kazakhstan summit, and said the agreement prevents establishment of foreign military bases and presence of foreign vessels in the Sea and bans use of the territories of a littoral state against another.
"It was also agreed that any vessel sailing in the Caspian Sea has to be under the flag of one of the 5 littoral states," Farsnews cited Rouhani as saying.
