Azerbaijan has been elected the chair of the General Conference of the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) for three years.
This decision was taken during the 12th Session of the ISESCO General Conference in Baku. The presidency was transferred to Azerbaijan from Saudi Arabia.
The opening session was attended by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and the first lady of Azerbaijan, the president of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, a goodwill ambassador of ISESCO, Mehriban Aliyeva.
The head of state noted in his speech that the holding of the 12th Session of the ISESCO General Conference in Baku is a remarkable event for Azerbaijan. Ilham Aliyev said that ISESCO has made great strides in the field of science, education and culture, becoming a significant organization.
According to him, Azerbaijan has become one of the active ISESCO members. A number of important events were held in Baku through this organization, the president recalled.
He also awarded the Director General of ISESCO Abdulaziz Othman Al-Twaijri with the Order of Friendship (Dostluq). The corresponding decree was signed by Ilham Aliyev earlier.
The ISESCO director general in his speech expressed gratitude for the award.

The Chairman of the ISESCO Executive Council, Boubacar Doukoure, speaking at the plenary session, drew attention to the significant achievements of Azerbaijan in strengthening Islamic solidarity. He said that these achievements are the result of the efforts made by President Ilham Aliyev.
The country’s Minister of Culture and Tourism, Abulfas Garayev, noted in his speech that the country played an important role in achieving the great success of ISESCO.
He also stressed that Azerbaijan attaches great importance to developing cooperation with this organization. Garayev pointed out that the first lady Mehriban Aliyeva is a goodwill ambassador of the organization, which is a vivid example of cooperation between Azerbaijan and ISESCO at the highest level.
