Azerbaijan to hold extraordinary presidential election

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed today an order announcing extraordinary presidential election in Azerbaijan.

Under the order, the election will be held on April 11, 2018.

Ilham Aliyev also instructed Azerbaijan's Central Election Commission to officially establish the April 11th as election date and ensure the holding of presidential election in accordance with the republic’s Electoral Code.

Initially, the presidential election in Azerbaijan was expected to be held on October 17, 2018. Azerbaijan's CEC has started presidential election preparations on January 20.

The ruling New Azerbaijan Party (YAP) has earlier announced President Ilham Aliyev as the party’s candidate for the upcoming presidential election.

Ilham Aliyev was re-elected President of the Republic of Azerbaijan with 84.54 % of votes (the voter turnout was 72.31%) as the result of the presidential election of 2013.
