Ban Ki-moon: The exclusion of Russia from the UN Security Council is impossible

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon stated that the exclusion of Russia from the UN Security Council is technically impossible, because any idea or resolution requires the approval of all five permanent members.

Speaking about the respective appeals by Ukrainian and Polish politicians, the Secretary General said he had not heard anything like that, noting that he only knows about the growing number of votes among the members of the United Nations calling for reform of the Security Council. "The idea is that the Council should be more open, democratic and representative. This issue is really being discussed," TASS quotes Ban Ki-moon as saying.

He also reminded that Russia is a permanent member of the Security Council. "I would not even want to comment on issues of which I am not fully aware," the Secretary General concluded.
