Ban Ki-moon calls for participation in Istanbul's Humanitarian Summit

The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has called on world leaders to attend the upcoming World Humanitarian Summit , which will be held in Istanbul on May 23-24.

"The World Humanitarian Summit is a unique opportunity to generate the momentum for change and send a message of solidarity and support to the 125 million people in immediate crisis," he said.

"This is the message that I ask you to deliver to your capitals: to come to Istanbul at the highest level and to show leadership on the great challenges of the 21st century," RIA Novosti cited him as saying.

Through the course of the summit, they will convene seven roundtable sessions. According to the Secretary-General, this will provide a space for leaders from Member States, civil society and the private sector to focus on a number of challenges crucial to achieving the 2030 Agenda and other shared goals.

The summit outcomes will include a Chair’s Summary. That follow-up will begin with the ECOSOC Humanitarian Affairs Segment in June. In September the Secretary-General will present his report to the General Assembly, presenting the outcomes of the Summit and further possible steps ahead.
