Bayramov: Azerbaijan and Armenia have unique opportunity to achieve normalization of relations

Azerbaijan assumes that for the first time since the restoration of independence, both Azerbaijan and Armenia got a truly unique opportunity to achieve peacebuilding and establish good neighbourly relations, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov said during a joint press conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Baku.

"Because the fundamental problem existing during the Armenian occupation has been eliminated. Azerbaijan is guided by this principle not only in words, but in actions as well," the Azerbaijani diplomat said.

"Within a short period of time following the second Karabakh war and signing the trilateral statement, it was Azerbaijan that first expressed its readiness to turn the page of enmity and reach a peace agreement between the two countries. If anyone thinks it was an easy decision, I recommend them visit the liberated territories and witness what we saw when we returned there," Bayramov said.

He noted that it was Azerbaijan that laid out basic principles of establishing interstate relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan in February of 2022. These principles have been welcomed both by the Armenian political leadership and the whole world.

The countries advanced the most in opening communications in terms of normalizing Armenia-Azerbaijan ties. So, it was Azerbaijan, represented by President Ilham Aliyev, who insisted on including the paragraph related to opening communications in the trilateral statement, thus restoring economic ties,” the minister stated.
