Berlin urges to continue gas transit through Ukraine after 2019

Head of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs Heiko Maas said that the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine should continue after 2019.

"We support negotiations on gas transit through Ukraine," he said in Kiev.

Maas recalled that Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel made it clear to Russian President Vladimir Putin that "implementing alternative gas transit via Ukraine for the future is a very important subject to us and President Putin gave her certain promises," Interfax reported.

According to German minister, they are going through the stage of those promises being fulfilled.

"There are still many problems in this regard and they need to be solved, but I am optimistic about the prospect of those promises being kept," Maas said, expressing hope that there will still be an alternative transit of gas via Ukraine in the future.
