Berlin welcomes release of Leyla Yunus

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has welcomed the decision of an Azerbaijani court to release the activist Leyla Yunus from prison.

"This is an important humanitarian step," he wrote on his Facebook page.

"Leyla Yunus and her husband Arif will receive urgently needed medical care outside the prison," the head of the German Foreign Ministry noted.

Leyla and Arif Yunus have been charged with treachery, tax evasion, fraud and illegal business. On 13 August 2015 Leyla was sentenced to 8.5 years in jail and her husband to 7 years in jail.

Yesterday the Appeal Court of Baku changed her prison term to a suspended sentence.
