Blinken on what meeting with Lavrov may help to understand

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Geneva probably will help to understand whether there is an opportunity for further diplomatic interaction in connection with the situation around Ukraine.

"When I have a chance to see my Russian counterpart, I think it’s a good opportunity, because since this last week of very intensive discussions with Russia in the Strategic Stability Dialogue between the United States and Russia, the NATO-Russia Council, the OSCE, we’ve all had an opportunity to think about what we heard from each other.  The Russians have had a chance, I assume, to go back and consult with President Putin.  We’ve had a chance to consult closely among ourselves," Blinken said after talks with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock in Berlin..

He stressed that as a result of the meetings they will be able to see further, whether there is still a clear diplomatic path forward, one that Germany and the United States together are determined to pursue.

Earlier, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that on January 21, the Russian top diplomat would meet with Blinken in Geneva. According to her, the two officials would discuss any further steps related to proposals on security guarantees submitted by Moscow.

On December 17, 2021, the Russian Foreign Ministry published the draft agreements between Moscow and Washington on security guarantees and the measures of ensuring the security of Russia and NATO member states. Russia-US consultations on these issues were held on January 10 in Geneva, a session of the NATO-Russia Council was held on January 12 in Brussels and a meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council where these initiatives were also discussed took place on January 13 in Vienna.
