Bodies of Il-20 crew and wreckage pulled up on board of Russian ships

The place where the Russian military aircraft Il-20 with 14 people on board fell into the Mediterranean was spotted, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

The location was found 27 kilometers to the west of the village of Banias in Latakia province.

"The bodies of the crew of the downed IL-20 and their personal belongings, as well as the wreckage of the aircraft, have been located and pulled up on board of the Russian ships off the coast of Syria," RIA Novosti cited the Russian Defense Ministry as saying.

Eight ships, including Russian Naval cutters and supply vessels, are participating in the operation to located the crew of the Russian IL-20 aircraft.

Earlier, the Russian Defense Ministry said that the Il-20 aircraft had been accidentally downed by Syrian air defenses as the Israeli F-16 jets had been using it as a cover. The ministry added that it considered such actions by Israel to be hostile and reserved the right to take retaliatory steps. Fifteen Russian servicemen were killed as a result of the attack.
