British MPs reject Johnson’s Brexit law

The British parliament rejected Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s three-day Brexit legislation timetable by 322 votes to 308 yesterday evening.

After agreeing a last-minute Brexit deal with the EU last week, Johnson was trying to pass the domestic law needed to enact it. The 110-page Withdrawal Agreement Bill would typically be scrutinized over weeks and months, but Johnson proposed condensing the timetable to just a few days.

The defeat leaves Johnson with no clear way to deliver his Brexit deal on time, Reuters reported.

Johnson said earlier in the day during the first debate on the bill in the House of Commons that Downing Street would pull the Brexit bill and push for an early election in the event that MPs rejects the legislation's timetable and the EU accepts a delay.
