Brussels urges Tehran to release Narges Mohammadi

The European External Action Service called on Iran to release human rights defender Narges Mohammadi, who has been recently sentenced to eight years prison term and 70 lashes.

"Enforcing this sentence, including the physical punishment, is against the universal principles of human rights and the rule of law," the statement reads.

It was also noted that Mohammadi, who already had to endure years in prison because of her human rights advocacy, has devoted her life to the cause of human rights.

"The EU calls on Iran to comply with its obligations under international law and urgently release Mohammadi, taking also into account her deteriorating health condition," the service added.
