COVID-19 incidence may increase in Russia after May holidays

The founder and director-general of the scientific centre for molecular genetic research DNKOM Andrey Isaev predicts the rise in the COVID-19 incidence in Russia after the May holidays, TASS writes.

“Judging by how the new wave of coronavirus is spreading in other countries, it can be assumed that the rise in the incidence in Russia will take place in the second half of May, that is, immediately after the holiday weekend, when people will move more actively and make contacts,” the scientist said.

He added that China, Hong Kong, Korea, Australia and New Zealand, where new variations of the omicron - BA.4 and BA.5 - have been identified, are currently experiencing the largest surge in cases. “So far, none of these strains has been officially detected in Russia. However, we must understand that in our country, the publication of sequencing data occurs with a significant delay of about a month,” the specialist emphasized.
