Canada preparing to lift sanctions against Iran

The Government of Canada is planning to lift the sanctions against Iran, as well as to open an embassy in Tehran, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada, Stephane Dion, said.
"It's true that the United Nations has asked countries to lift sanctions that were put in place to prevent Iran from using nuclear weapons for military purposes," he said.

According to the minister, "Canada will lift its sanctions but will maintain a level of mistrust for a regime that must not have nuclear weapons, a regime that is a danger to human rights and is not a friend to our allies". He added that the lifting of the sanctions will be in accordance with the allies of Canada.

The head of the Foreign Ministry also said that Ottawa will open its embassy in Tehran. Canada closed its diplomatic mission in Iran in 2012 and expelled Iranian diplomats from Ottawa, TASS reminds.
