Cubans line streets as Fidel Castro's ashes begin final journey

Schoolchildren and local residents lined the streets of Matanzas to say a final farewell to late revolutionary leader Fidel Castro. People cried and cheered as the small, Cuban-flag covered casket containing the remains of the 90-year-old leader was driven through the coastal city.

Matanzas is one of the first stops in a more than 500-mile, four-day procession of Castro’s ashes across the country, Telegraph.co.uk writes.

Fidel Castro's ashes started the journey in Havana and will travel across Cuba to their final resting place in the eastern city of Santiago. The ashes will be interred Sunday, ending the nine-day mourning period for the man who ruled the country for nearly 50 years.
