Dagestan celebrates Constitution Day

Today, on July 26th, the Constitution Day of the Republic of Dagestan is being celebrated. On this day, it was adopted by the Constitutional Assembly in 1994. The New Constitution was adopted by the Constitutional Assembly on July 10th, 2003. Officially, it was released on July 26th.

Head of the region Ramazan Abdullatipov congratulated the people of Dagestan and expressed the necessity to respect the constitution and protect democratic institutions.

"I congratulate Dagestanis on the national holiday - the Constitution Day of the Republic of Dagestan. The Constitution is the basic law of the country, which created a solid political and legal foundation for the formation of our statehood in the framework of the Russian Federation,’’ Abdullatipov reminded.

The Head of Dagestan said that the main purpose for the authorities today is to strengthen the unity and cohesion of the multinational people of Dagestan.

Work on the draft Constitution of Dagestan began in summer of 1990, the professor of the department of national history of the historical department at DSU, doctor of historical sciences Akhmed Kurbanov said. 

It intensified in 1993, after the adoption of the Constitution of Russia. The completed project was published for discussion at various levels. "After that it was finalized and submitted to the Supreme Council on June 10th 1994 where it received unanimous support. Then election of members of the Constitutional Assembly of the Republic took place in accordance with the decision of the Government,’’ the scientist said, adding that it involved almost 500 representatives of 17 nationalities.

Member of the Presidential Council on the development of Civil Society and Human Rights Maksim Shevchenko told in an interview with a ‘Vestnik Kavkaza’ correspondent  that the Constitution of Dagestan fixed important moments of its life, as a multinational republic within the Russian Federation. 

"The national diversity, the need for the Dagestani authorities to ensure the development of different languages ​​and cultures. This is what is enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic, as well as the necessity to ensure peace and harmony among peoples, without slackening out and opposing one nation to another, the creation of a real political system that was based not on ethnic clan basis, and on the basis of the Russian Constitution despite the fact that the Dagestan constitution is not contrary to it, and it can not contravene it,’’ he told.
