Date of Georgia's presidential election officially set

Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili set the date of the presidential election - October 28.

He said that the decision was agreed with the Prime Minister. "The corresponding resolution will be sent to the Georgian Prime Minister, and further procedures will be held," Sputnik-Georgia cited Margvelashvili as saying.

According to Georgia's Channel 1 and presidential and government sources, Georgia will hold the election on October 28, and the president will soon formally announce the election date at a special press briefing.

Electoral legislation requires that the presidential campaign begin as soon as the date is formally announced. Several opposition candidates have already started canvassing.

Margvelashvili stated that he has not yet made a decision concerning his participation in the race.

The Georgian Dream ruling party  has yet to name a candidate. Head of the party Bidzina Ivanishvili said last week that it would be more welcomed if the ruling party supported an independent candidate in the elections. Georgian media discuss that the Georgian Dream will support  Georgia’s former Foreign Minister Salome Zurabishvili.
