Yekaterina Lakhova: Women bring harmony into power

‘‘Women should be represented in the government, because their social experience helps men – who occupy leadership positions more often in Russia – to make good decisions. Harmony can be achieved only through joint discussion of the problems. In the Caucasus, Tatyana Yegorova managed to become the Speaker of Parliament in Kabardino-Balkaria,’’ the chairwoman of the Women's Union of Russia, member of the Federation Council committee on the federal structure, regional policy, local government and northern affairs, the senator from the Bryansk region Yekaterina Lakhova said today in the studio of Vestnik Kavkaza.

"I believe that men should understand that not only they will be successful in power. Women will also head many areas, especially social, and influence decision-making. It is wrong when there are no women in power," she said.

"Harmony occurs when they discuss a particular issue together. A woman takes into account all family difficulties and problems. And I would like to implement all this social experience," the senator said.

Lakhova noted that the Caucasus still lags behind other regions regarding the number of women in power. However, there are already some positive trends: for example, Tatyana Yegorova became a speaker of the parliament of Kabardino-Balkaria on September 18th last year.

‘‘I am very pleased with Kabardino-Balkaria. The parliament of the republic is headed by Tatiana Yegorova. I know her very well. She was a deputy of the State Council several years. I am very glad that she is the chairwoman of the Parliament,’’ the chairwoman of the Union of Russian Women said.

According to the senator, in general the situation in the Caucasus is linked to the fact that women and women's organizations tend to take a back seat in comparison with men.

At the same time, she said that the situation in other southern regions of Russia is not so bad. "Women take an active part in politics and influence decision-making in Stavropol Territory, the Rostov region, and in Krasnodar Territory,’’ the senator said.

The chairwoman of the Union of Russian Women added that the Caucasus has its own characteristics regarding the situation of women in society. For example, the age between the bride and groom differs significanty. ‘‘The age difference in marriage registration is observed there. But women have such a choice. If she wants to have a husband who is 30-40 years older, this choice is supported by tradition, and she follows her parents’s advice, so it is a normal thing," Yekaterina Lakhova concluded.
