Elkhan Alasgarov: Baku expects adequate steps from Washington

Azerbaijan expects the new US administration will take more adequate position on the developments in the South Caucasus and the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in particular, head of the expert council of Baku Network, Elkhan Alasgarov, said in an interview with Vestnik Kavkaza.

Positive expectations from President Donald Trump and his team are associated with their intention to increase the level of responsibility of international organizations, especially the United Nations, before their members. "Azerbaijan is truly interested in the reorganization of the UN's work, because UN Security Council's four resolutions, according to which the Armenian army must withdrawn its troops from the occupied territories, are being violated, and nothing is being done against Yerevan. If this will change, we expect real steps towards the liberation of our territories," he noted.

Baku also hopes that there will be no more misunderstanding between the US and Azerbaijan. "Previous administrations adopted various resolutions of inadequate nature. Let me remind you that Azerbaijan was the only state after the collapse of the USSR, which was subjected to the 907 amendment, which prohibited the US government to provide assistance to the republic. In other words, the US adopted sanctions against the country, whose territories were occupied. This is an act of injustice. We hope that this amendment will be completely abolished," he stressed.

"There are many other steps that we would like to see. We try to keep our relations at a high level, and I hope that the new administration, which currently develops a unified platform for world problems, will meet our expectations after some time," he concluded.
