Erdogan: Turkey may open gates for migrants to Europe if no help given - media

Turkey may have to open the route for migrants into Europe if Ankara does not receive sufficient international support to deal with Syrian refugees, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said.

"Our goal is to resettle at least 1 million Syrian refugees in the safe zone that we will establish along the 450-kilometer border line," Erdoğan said in a speech in Ankara.

"We will be forced to open the gates. We cannot be forced to handle the burden alone," Daily Sabah cited the Turkish leader as saying.

Erdogan also said Turkey was determined to create a "safe zone" in northeast Syria in partnership with the United States by the end of September, but was prepared to act alone if necessary.
