Eight people were lightly injured after a massive 5.9-magnitude earthquake hit Istanbul, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said, speaking at Istanbul's Atatürk Airport.
Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu said on Twitter there were no reports of deaths from the quake. A number of schools canceled classes. A minaret of one of the mosques in Istanbul got destroyed by the tremors, according to reports.
The Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute recorded several aftershocks, with the highest at 4.4 magnitude.
