The European Union‘s compassion for refugees will not come at the expense of its security, the European Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas warns in the wake of violence in Germany carried out by asylum seekers.
"Europe‘s doors are open to those who flee war and persecution and who seek asylum, but we will defend ourselves against attacks on our way of life. Our sense of compassion does not and must not come at the expense of our security," he said.
"The EU will control its borders, make the acquisition of weapons more difficult and improve cooperation between its national security and intelligence services," Schinas added.
