European Council doesn't like idea of Russia returning to G8

European Council President Donald Tusk said that it was evident that US President Donald Trump and the leaders of other G7 countries continued to disagree on trade, climate change and the Iran nuclear deal.

"The rules-based international order is being challenged, quite surprisingly, not by the usual suspects, but by its main architect and guarantor, the US," he said during a briefing in the Quebec resort town of La Malbaie, where the G7 summit is being held.

Tusk said a priority is persuading the US to strengthen the current format of the G7 as a guarantor of the world order.

"I see a lot of speculation about G6 plus one, or G7 minus one, or G7 plus one. Let’s leave seven as it is. It’s a lucky number. Russia is less interested in this than our other partners here in Canada," Politico cited him as saying.

It comes after Trump said he wants Russia to rejoin the G7 and make it the G8 again
