Ex-mayor of Tbilisi to spend almost five years in prison

The ex-Mayor of Tbilisi, Gigi Ugulava, who spent only a night in freedom, was sentenced to 4 years and 6 months of imprisonment for an episode about creating fictitious jobs, according to ‘Rustavi-2’.

Ugulava was released from custody after winning the case against Parliament in the Constitutional Court of Georgia in the middle of the week. The court ruled that the part of the Code of Criminal Procedure, which allows a person to remanded in custody for more than nine months, is unconstitutional and Ugulava has been detained for 14 months already, the Sputnik Georgia news agency reports.

Tbilisi City Court released Ugulava, but his term in freedom was short-lived: yesterday the Tbilisi City Court pronounced the ex-mayor guilty, but in another case, the embezzlement of budget funds in 2009-2010.
